Maintaining a healthy weight

One of the keys to staying healthy is to keep your weight under control. There are lots of health risks that are associated with being overweight. There are also a number of health risks to being underweight. Everybody knows that they need to maintain a healthy weight; the question is just how do you go about doing it? Fortunately this is not as hard as a lot of people seem to think that it is.

The first thing that you have to do if you are going to maintain a healthy weight is to determine just what a healthy weight is. There are lots of charts that you can use but you have to be careful with them. Most use a weight range that is ideal for your height. The problem is that muscle weighs a lot more than fat so if you have a lot of muscle the charts may not work that well for you. A far better approach is to use your body fat rather than your weight to determine if you are at healthy level. Also keep in mind that being too thin is just as unhealthy as being overweight.

In order to maintain a healthy body weight there are really only two things that you have to do, one is eat healthy the other is exercise. Healthy eating is where most people struggle. There is no great secret to how to do it, try to limit fat and sugar as far as possible and eat fresh foods rather than processed foods. The key is actually how many calories you consume. If you are trying to lose weight you want to eat just under the maintenance level. You can find a chart on the internet that will tell you how many calories a person of your weight should be eating in a day. Eating too little is very unhealthy so you want to make sure that you don't starve yourself.

The other key to maintaining a healthy weight is to make sure that you are getting enough exercise. It really doesn't matter which exercise you do as long as you are active. The key is to find something that you enjoy and that you will stick to, consistency is the most important thing. That being said you will find that it is easier to maintain a healthy weight if you are doing weight bearing exercises that add muscle.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things that you can do if you want to stay healthy. Not only will it keep you from getting any number of illnesses but it will also make you feel and look better. It is not all that hard to keep yourself at a healthy weight all it really takes is a choice to live a lifestyle that will allow you to do it.
