Running at the beach

One of the best ways to stay in shape is to go for a run. There are lots of places that you can do this but when you live in LA one of the better options is to run at the beach. If you are going to run at the beach there are a few things that you are going to want to keep in mind that are different from running in other places.

There are quite a few advantages to running together at the beach; the biggest of these is that running on the sand will be less jarring on your joints. This will help to prevent injuries. A lot of people also find that having the breeze blowing in off of the water makes the run more comfortable as well. However the biggest benefit of running on sand is that it is more difficult than running on a more firm surface. This means that you will get a better work out which should help to keep you in better shape.

Because of the fact that it is harder to run on sand you are going to want to make sure that you build up to it. The best way to do this is to start by running on the wet sand; this will be much easier than running on dry sand. You can then start to add small intervals of running on dry sand and slowly build up to running on it. When you do run on dry sand you will find that you don't have the same traction that you normally have so you will want to use a shorter stride. Also remember that when you are running on sand you will have a slower pace.

There are some important safety issues that you have to keep in mind if you are going to run on the beach. The first of these is to make sure that you are running on a flat surface. The beach usually has an uphill slope because of the tides; running on these can damage your knees and ankles. Either run down near the water or up higher were the ground will be flatter. It is also highly recommended that you wear shoes while you are running. A lot of people like to run barefoot on the beach but you have to be careful if you do this since a lot of broken glass tends to end up on the beach.

As with any time that you are one the beach you are going to want to make sure that you protect your skin from the sun. This is something that a lot of people don't do because they seem to think that unless you are laying on the beach you don't have to worry about it. This is not the case you need to make sure that you use sunscreen any time that you are out in the sun.
